The Languedoc Rousillon coast is magnificent and very child friendly being mostly sand, unlike the more trendy Cote d'Azure. Being on the Mediterranean coast the sea is much calmer especially places such as Vias Plage with effective artificial breakwaters and child friendly restaurants nearby. This is probably the best for families and the quickest (about 30 minutes) to get to thanks to the A75.

A bit further away (about an hour), near Bezier is Valros Plage, which has excellent amenities for children including play areas on the beach in view of restaurants and snack places.

It's not normally this quiet, the picture was taken in February.

Sète is the second largest fishing port in the Mediterranean. The town is linked with a network of canals lined with bars and restaurants selling fresh fish and shellfish caught locally. It is also a working port for freight and ferries to Africa so a walk around the harbour is very interesting. You will also see the normal yachts that abound in any Mediterranean port. Sète is pleasant day's excursion with good beaches either side of the town, quiet to the north and busy to the south.

Beach at Palavas (Winter) you can just see Grande Motte behind

Palavas le Flots is like a smaller Sète but not so commercial and with it's beach in the town itself. This stretches for many kilometres either side! Palavas is our personal favourite beach. It is also popular with students from Montpellier.

Like many coastal resorts in the area Jousting is carried out in July and August. This is fun to watch as the objective is to knock the opponent into the water.

The salt lakes around Palavas are popular with flamingos but take a long lens as they are very nervous.

There are some very nice restaurants in the centre and some beaches have places for snacks (from sandwiches to fish meals).

Across the Étang de Thau from Sete is Méze with a small but very gentle beach as it is on the lake shore rather than the sea.

The picture to your left is a view of Séte and oyster beds on the Étang de Thau from Méze.

The Etang de Thau is famous for it's oysters the picture on the left showing some beds.

Bouzigues is the place to go for these but anywhere in the area is good and the price is amazingly cheap compared to the UK

La Grande Motte, to the right, is just north of Palavas. This is an amazing architectural work which seen from a distance (it can be seen from the beach at Palavas) looks more like an amusement park than the holiday resort that it is. The strange buildings are a background to marinas and beaches so it like a futuristic Cap d'Agde.

Cap d’Agde is a bustling modern purpose built resort with lots of shops and restaurants .there is also a large marina with lots of boats, deep sea fishing ,water and all water sports.

There is an Aqua park the children will love.

For a days excursion, further down the coast (near the Spanish border) you will find Colliure which is a very pretty fishing village. This is best visited out of season. The photos below were taken in October when we witnessed filming and army manoeuvres on the same day.

This is just a taste of the options available, the area is full of interest.
