Herault is a part of Languedoc Roussillon which is a wonderful part of Southern France, great Mediterranean weather and miles of sandy beaches which are less than an hour away. But it is inland where you find the real France, rivers, forests, mountains, plains, small villages most with their own 'caves', where you are most welcome to taste the wine. The nearest quality wine region is Faugere, here there is even a service station with a cave attached, open during garage hours so more convenient than the other 'caves', and a greater selection. , we recommend buying this from a cave and laying it down for at least 5 years. There are however plenty of 'caves', nearer even in Soubes. The following suggestions are a small part of the options available and selected to show variety rather than for completeness.

The restored castle at Carcassonne (right) has attracted criticism from some (who say it should have been left as found) but see it and make your own mind up. We think it an experience not to be missed.

You can eat a very good and reasonably priced meal within it's outer walls. At some times of the year there are pageants to add to the pleasure of a visit.

Whilst it is over an hours drive from Larkfield, the scenery is never boring. Try the motorway route through the Minervois in one direction and the scenic, more direct (but slower) route through the Black Mountains for the other. The scenery is totally different on the two routes.

If you take the motorway route to Carcassonne stop on the Narbonne side of Bezier to see the 'Neuf Écluse', (Nine Locks) on the Canal du Midi (left), the site of Rick Stein's gastronomic tour.

The Canal du Midi runs from the Atlantic Coast to Sète to link with the Canal Sète a Rhone.

This however is probably the best scenery on it and a pleasant time can be passed just watching the canal traffic navigate the locks.
