The Languedoc is a wonderful part of Southern France, great Mediterranean weather and miles of sandy beaches which are less than an hour away. But it is inland where you find the real France, rivers, forests, mountains, plains, small villages most with their own 'caves', where you are most welcome to taste the wine. In Faugere there is even a service station with a cave attached, open garage hours so more convenient than the other 'caves', and a greater selection. The nearest quality wine region is Faugere, we recommend buying this from a cave and laying it down for at least 5 years. There are however plenty of 'caves', nearer even in Soubes. The following suggestions are a small part of the options available and selected to show variety rather than for completeness.
The rugged and picturesque local landscape has to be seen to be believed.

| Cirque de Labeil. On a clear day the coast at Sète can be seen from the land above this cirque. | For pot-holers the nearby Grotte de Labeil (right) may be visited but by prior arrangement only and with a guide. |

Use the lovely rivers for canoeing, swimming or just taking a picnic and enjoying cooling off. The picture left is of the Pont Diable on the river Hérault near the Grotte de Clamouse (right), which is ideal for you to cool off in with its wonderful stalagmites and stalactites. Canoeing is popular on the river and there are many areas for children to play. As you can see the views are stunning. |

There are many medieval towns such as Lodève, already mentioned, Clermont l'Herault and Pézenas to visit if you wish for some culture.
|
The man made Lac de Salagou is ten minutes away, near to Clermont l'Herault with 1800 acres of water for swimming, fishing, boating and wind surfing (besides the more restful soaking of the sun and walking of course). The views from the nearby Cirque de Mourèze are not to be missed, if you enjoy walking. There are several restaurants of varying character around the lake. |

For
shopping
Montpellier (left) is the place to go,
this is a university city with a lovely pedestrian centre filled with cafes and
bars for sitting and watching the world go by.
It is a mixture of old and new and is a vibrant, exciting city to visit.
It also boasts a Michelin 3 star restaurant for the gourmets amongst you.

To our minds the inland
Agde
(left and right) is
a much nicer place than the better known
Cap d'Agde on the coast.
Agde has fascinating curios shopping opportunities, in alleys such as that shown on the left.
Right is an amazing 'Trompe d'oie' (look closely it's not what it seems and is as impressive in the flesh as in a photograph).
It also has excellent restaurants overlooking the river Hérault which runs alongside the town.
